A Little Bit About Me...
|
I feel very fortunate, because much of my childhood was spent at our cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin. In the morning, we helped with chores. And in the afternoon - we went swimming!
Our lake was shallow with a muddy bottom - home to snapping turtles and leeches. We left the snapping turtles alone, but we scooped the leeches out with a strainer. Our grandmother paid a penny apiece for the small ones and a nickel for the whoppers. My two sisters and I loved sitting on the edge of the dock. We dipped our feet in the water, waiting for tiny minnows to tickle our toes. Each spring, peeper frogs sang from the marsh, welcoming us back. The cabin is where I fell in love with nature. As a kid, I usually had my nose stuck in a book. My favorites were animal stories - the Black Stallion series by Walter Farley, BIG RED and IRISH RED by Jim Kjelgaard. I also loved the Boxcar Children, Trixie Belden, and Nancy Drew. And I read stacks of comic books! When I was growing up, my parents said I had "horse fever." I daydreamed about horses and drew pictures of horses. Sometimes, I pretended I WAS a horse! Alas, my horse fever never went away. Eventually, we became a two-horse family. My sister and I spent hours exploring the north woods of Wisconsin on horseback. One night, I was angry with my sister and decided I would ride my horse into the forest and camp there for the night. Wow...the forest is DARK at night! My horse and I returned by around 10:00 that same evening! I am now married with four grown children (who have children of their own). I live in the country with my husband, two dogs, three cats, and a horse named Jack. I still love to read. And I love to write. I hope my stories will make children smile - and maybe even spark a desire to make the world a better place. |
